Background

The River Holme catchment offers river access opportunities via moors, farmland and town.  The following three Routes projects have identified and delivered a wide range of work to improve way marking, access infrastructure and biodiversity.

Route 1: Meltham Pleasure Grounds

This route provides a connection between the popular Meltham Pleasure Grounds river walk and the wild moors above Meltham with excellent public transport links at the intersection.

River Holme Connections volunteers, the Friends of Meltham Pleasure Grounds and Holmfirth High School pupils carried out a range of improvement work such as non-native invasive plant control (rhododendron, cherry laurel and American skunk cabbage), footpath creation, wildflower planting and seed sowing.

Route 2: Damside Road, Huddersfield

This route links footpaths around the south east of Huddersfield town centre and will open the area up to pedestrians away from the busy road.  This route connects residential areas beyond and through Huddersfield town centre.

River Holme Connections volunteers and CSR volunteers from Cummins Turbo Technologies, Huddersfield, carried out a range of improvement work such as invasive plant control (Himalayan balsam), footpath clearance (cutting back vegetation), wildflower planting and litter picking.

Route 3: Thongsbridge to New Mill

This is a relatively level, accessible and attractive river valley walk connecting amenities of the two villages with connections to Holmfirth, Brockholes and Holmfirth High School; passing interesting and historic features of the area.

A total number of 84 volunteers donated an amazing 213 volunteer hours towards these projects.  Thank you!

The above work has kindly been funded by Cobbett Environmental Ltd through the Landfill Communities Fund.
